Lyn tells us that she learned to play at the age of 40. The rest is silence!
Adrian Mills - 2nd Trombone
From the age of 7, I went to piano lessons each week, reaching Grade V Theory, then I joined Sidmouth Band whilst still at school, playing Eb bass. During my apprenticeship in electronic engineering, I bought a small bore tenor trombone and played with bands in the Sutton and Croydon area, until I lost my front teeth playing Rugby! Several years later, whilst I was at home, the Sidmouth Band secretary persuaded me to help them out, by playing Eb bass for a contest. After the contest I took up playing tenor trombone again, eventually buying a "Conn Constellation" for myself. I was playing with local brass bands, as well as big bands and orchestral music. My work as a technical author took me all over the country and I used to play when I could. Having recently retired, I rejoined Honiton Band last year and still find playing enjoyable, even at the age of 70!
John Marriott - Bass Trombone
I’m a retired teacher of Modern Languages, although I spent 10 years running my own Art & Crafts Materials business in Exeter. I still work part-time as a tutor of French and German, however. My musical ‘career’ began in my early 50s, when I had the good fortune to attend a music evening class entitled ‘Learn to play a wind instrument from scratch’ , run by an enthusiastic ex-Marine. At that time I had never touched a musical instrument, let alone played it and thought that a quaver was an alternative to Smith’s crisps! In a short time I had learnt the rudiments of the trumpet and furtive blasts behind the counter of my shop, when no customers were present, did much to enhance my practice regime. It soon became evident however, that my embouchure was more suited to a larger mouth-piece - hence the bass trombone. I’ve now played for Honiton for about 7 years and also play for Ottery St Mary and occasionally for Lyme Regis. I can say that I am well and truly addicted.
